I’ve been an Arcanum fan for a long, long time, particularly of the atmosphere the game just oozes out of every pore. Its world map is one of those details that really help drive home that this is a fantastical world inspired by 19th century Victorian England, with its faithfully rendered coastlines and a lot of ornamentation. I liked it so much that I decided to get it printed for putting on the wall (canvas print on a wooden frame).
I couldn’t find a good high-resolution map on the Internet, so rather than give up, I decided to create my own. After failing to extract it from the game’s files, I elected to just take in-game shots of the map, then create a composite, clean it up in Photoshop, pass it through an AI enlargement filter, and then add cities and states to the map.
A preview is shown below. The actual file is in 8k, and that resolution makes it good enough for a 50×50 cm crisp canvas print.
